The pain on the physical level is like an alarm system notifying you that there is something emotional that needs attention.

When I introduce myself to new people, and mention I am an acupuncturist. Majority of people reach for their shoulders and ask if acupuncture can help with shoulder pain.

On a physical level, YES acupuncture can release points of tension in the body. However, the power of acupuncture is its ability to help you tap inside yourself to help heal the emotional imbalances that are root of the pain.

The meridians that run through the shoulders are large intestine, small intestine, and gallbladder.

Here are some questions to initiate your thought process. They may or may not be related to you, but they can spark other questions. This will help you understand your pain. Once you can see the cause of it, then you can find solutions to resolve the issue and heal.

Large Intestine: Physically: Are your bowel movements regular? Do you suffer from constipation or diarrhea? Emotionally: the large intestine is about letting go. Are you having a hard time letting go, specifically sadness? When we can’t let something go, it becomes heavy. This heaviness sits on our shoulders; this weight can cause the muscles to become tight and taut.

Small Intestine: Physically: Are you eating foods that work best for your body? Do you suffer from bloating, gas, and indigestion? How are you digesting your food? Emotionally: the small intestine is about separating what is serving you and what is not serving you. How are you digesting and absorbing life? Are you able to make clear decisions? Does life overwhelm you? The inability to make decisions can create stagnation, and bring forth that weight that sits on your shoulders.

Gallbladder: Physically: How is your diet? Are you eating rich, greasy foods or overindulging in drugs and alcohol? Emotionally: the gallbladder is about courage, making decisions, and following through. Do you have a hard time making a decision? Are there emotions like anger that are clouding your decision-making process? Does stress cause you to become frustrated? Do you have a hard time completing projects? All these pent-up emotions sit on your shoulders and causing pain and discomfort.

The common thread between these three meridians is they are digestive organs. Most of the physical issues can be resolved with the proper management of your diet. The fact is your diet is highly important for the nourishment of your body. Emotionally, having the courage to be able to let go of the negative emotions that are not serving you, and to live in your truth. Will allow you to have the clarity to make the best decisions that are aligned with your life.
